How do you plan the nights before and after a Vancouver cruise?
Sleep within a walk or a SeaBus ride of Canada Place the night before you sail, and come in from YVR on the Canada Line. After you land, the park shuttle to the Capilano Suspension Bridge will hold your bags for the day.
By Adam BognarPublished Updated

Book the night before you sail within a walk or a SeaBus ride of Canada Place, and the morning of the cruise shrinks to a stroll with your bags. Fairmont Pacific Rim stands a 6-minute walk from the terminal. The two hotels at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver sit 21 minutes away by SeaBus, and from the airport the Canada Line runs straight to Waterfront Station beside the terminal in 27 minutes.
Canada Place mostly starts and ends Alaska cruises, so for most passengers the night that needs planning is the one before boarding or the one after landing. We compared eight hotels from our stays files on their distance from the terminal, what sits outside the room rate and one drawback each, and checked the transit, taxi and luggage details on TransLink's, YVR's and VIA Rail's own pages on 16 October 2026. Walking and driving times come from the OpenStreetMap routing engine, and every figure we worked out ourselves says so.
Where should you sleep the night before you sail?
The table runs from the closest hotel outward and ends at the airport, for the night after you land.
| Hotel | Where | To the cruise terminal | Outside the room rate | Suits | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fairmont Pacific Rim | Coal Harbour, Vancouver | 6-minute walk (419 m) | Plus GST, PST and hotel tax; parking $65 a night with taxes included | Couples and celebrations | Overnight parking costs $65 |
| Coast Lonsdale Quay Hotel | Lower Lonsdale, North Vancouver | 21 minutes by SeaBus and a walk | Plus GST, PST and hotel tax; parking at EasyPark's rates | Car-free trips and early crossings | No pool or hot tub |
| Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier | The Shipyards, North Vancouver | About 350 m to the SeaBus, then the 21-minute trip | Plus GST, PST and hotel tax; parking $42 a night with taxes included | Families and swimmers, with a 25-metre indoor pool | The first Sunday boat leaves Lonsdale Quay at 8:02 am |
| The Burrard | Downtown, by Davie Village | 21-minute walk, or 5 minutes by car | Plus GST, PST and hotel tax once the $2.76 nightly destination marketing fee goes into the rate; parking and pet rooms cost extra | Couples and cyclists on a mid-range budget | Rooms come without breakfast |
| Opus Vancouver | Yaletown | Canada Line 4 minutes to Waterfront, then a 6-minute walk | Plus GST, PST and hotel tax, and a $10 nightly destination fee plus tax | Short city breaks | Valet parking costs $59 a day |
| Sylvia Hotel | West End, on English Bay | 7 minutes by car | A 20.68% line the hotel calls taxes and a fee, and it never names the fee | Couples and dog owners | The walk to the terminal takes 37 minutes |
| HI Vancouver Downtown | West End | 26-minute walk | Plus tax, which HI's engine adds in the booking summary | Solo travellers on a budget | Check-in waits until 4 pm |
| Fairmont Vancouver Airport | Inside YVR | 27 minutes on the Canada Line, then a 6-minute walk | Plus GST, PST and hotel tax | A night between landing from the cruise and an early flight | Guests must be 19 or older to check in |
Fairmont Pacific Rim is the hotel to book if the budget stretches. The routing engine times the 419-metre walk from its Coal Harbour door to the terminal at 6 minutes, so a cruise departure starts on foot, and Waterfront Station is about 500 metres away for the train from the airport. Leave the car at home, because overnight parking costs $65 with taxes included. Botanist inside the hotel serves a two-course City Set lunch for $49 plus GST on weekdays from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, which suits a long lunch before a late boarding. The Pan Pacific Vancouver hotel shares the Canada Place building with the terminal itself.
The North Vancouver pair trade the walk for a boat ride. The Coast Lonsdale Quay Hotel takes the third floor of the Lonsdale Quay Market building beside the SeaBus, and the Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier sits about 350 metres east of the terminal with a heated 25-metre indoor pool. The SeaBus crosses to Waterfront in 12 minutes, and with the walk to Canada Place the trip takes 21 minutes. On a weekday a boat leaves Lonsdale Quay every 10 to 15 minutes for most of the day. Sunday sailings start at 8:02 am, so a Sunday cruise with an early boarding window works better from the Vancouver side. The City of North Vancouver acknowledges the Quay's ground as the traditional and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
All eight hotels in the table post their room rates before tax, and the label reads plus GST, PST and hotel tax. HI's booking terms say a booking's total includes the accommodation taxes, and its engine builds that total by adding them to the nightly rate. By our sums from the provincial rates that adds 19.175% to a room in the City of Vancouver: 8% PST, the 3% Municipal and Regional District Tax and the 2.5% Major Events tax that runs to 31 January 2030, plus 5% GST on the room and on those taxes, which the province charges only in the City of Vancouver. A room in the City of North Vancouver carries 16% until 31 January 2027, because its 3% hotel tax lapses on 1 February 2027 unless the province renews it. Opus adds a $10 nightly destination fee plus tax, and the Burrard's reservations site adds a $2.76 destination marketing fee to each night, so count both inside any rate you compare. The Sylvia's booking engine lists 20.68% under taxes in three unnamed lines, and its extended-stay page calls that figure taxes and a fee. That runs about 1.5 points above Vancouver's 19.175%, so ask the hotel what the fee is and for the total with it inside. If you book a short-term rental instead, pick a listing that shows its provincial registration number, which BC requires in both Vancouver and North Vancouver.
How do you get to Canada Place from YVR?
Take the Canada Line from YVR–Airport station to Waterfront Station, which takes 27 minutes by TransLink's station table, and walk 6 minutes to the terminal. Trains run every 6 minutes at peak and every 8 to 15 minutes at weekends. An adult tap costs $11.60 on a weekday before 6:30 pm and $10.00 after 6:30 pm, at weekends and on holidays in 2026, by our sums of the zone fare and TransLink's $6.50 YVR Airport AddFare. Transit fares carry no sales tax.
A taxi from YVR to Canada Place costs a flat $46 on the zone map YVR updated in October 2024 and still posts in 2026. GST and the $4.00 Passenger Load Charge both sit inside that fare under Rule 9 of the Passenger Transportation Board's Rates Rules Manual of 30 August 2026, and the tip goes on top. The routing engine puts the drive at 15.8 km and 27 minutes in free-flowing traffic. Uber and Lyft pick up from marked areas on Level 2 of both terminals, and YVR asks you to collect your bags before you request the ride.
For a North Vancouver hotel, stay on the train to Waterfront and take the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay. The same tap covers both if you board within 90 minutes, and the total stays at $11.60 or $10.00. Our guide to getting from YVR to North Vancouver covers the last boats and the taxi meter.
How do you get to Canada Place from Pacific Central Station?
Walk 3 minutes (245 metres by the routing engine) to Main Street–Science World station and ride the Expo Line 7 minutes to Waterfront. The terminal is a 6-minute walk from there. Pacific Central and Waterfront both sit in fare zone 1, so the trip costs the $3.50 one-zone adult fare by tap in 2026. A taxi covers the 2.6 km in 5 minutes in free-flowing traffic, for about $9 on the meter by our estimate from the Passenger Transportation Board's 2026 rates, before the tip.
Pacific Central Station opens daily from 4:30 am to midnight. Amtrak Cascades trains and Thruway buses run between here and Seattle every day, and since 8 June 2026 southbound Amtrak passengers clear US preclearance inside the station, so arrive an hour before a departure. VIA Rail's Canadian leaves for Toronto at 3:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays.
What do you do with your bags?
Hand them to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park shuttle if you're spending the day there. Cruise passengers can leave bags at the park's shuttle stop at Canada Place for free same-day storage at the park, and the free shuttle runs from Canada Place all year. The return ride needs proof of park admission.
Pacific Central Station stores bags for $6 each, and only for VIA Rail and Amtrak passengers on their day of travel. The baggage room opens 6:00 am to 5:30 pm with the last pickup at 4:00 pm and keeps nothing overnight, and VIA's page doesn't say whether tax is added. Among the hotels in the table, The Burrard says it holds bags at the front desk after its noon check-out, which helps on a post-cruise day with an evening flight. Taxi drivers in Metro Vancouver may not charge for luggage. Coaches set their own allowances: YVR Skylynx carries two bags free per ticket and charges $10 for each extra piece, and Epic Rides carries luggage and skis with no charge.
How do you fill the day after you land?
Most hotels in the table check in at 3 pm, and HI Vancouver Downtown at 4 pm, so a ship that docks in the morning leaves you a day with luggage. The Capilano bag drop solves it for a park day. A ride across on the SeaBus gives you Lonsdale Quay Market from 9 am, and the Polygon Gallery beside it opens by donation from Wednesday to Sunday. Our page on what to do from Canada Place times each sight there and back.
Onward travel leaves from Waterfront Station or from the terminal itself. The Canada Line back to YVR carries no AddFare toward the airport, so the ride costs the zone fare alone: $5.10 by tap on a weekday before 6:30 pm and $3.50 after 6:30 pm, at weekends and on holidays. On days when cruise ships are scheduled in port, the BC Ferries Connector leaves Canada Place at 8:55 am for Victoria and reaches Crystal Garden on Douglas Street at 1:30 pm, with fares that change by date on its booking page. Whistler is a coach ride from Burrard Station or the airport, and our page on Whistler without a car lays out the timetables.
What is open near the terminal on a port day?
The waterfront and the downtown sights keep daytime hours, and the Polygon Gallery and MONOVA in North Vancouver close on Mondays and Tuesdays.
| Sight | Each way from Canada Place | Opening hours | Closed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Place promenade | 0 min | No posted hours; the sails light up from dusk to dawn | None listed |
| Flyover in Vancouver | 0 min | 10 am to 7:30 pm daily | None listed |
| Gastown | 5 min | Shops and restaurants set their own | None listed |
| Vancouver Lookout | 9 min | 10 am to 6 pm, last elevator 5:30 pm | None listed |
| Bill Reid Gallery | 10 min | 10 am to 5 pm | Sundays and Mondays from October to May |
| Stanley Park | 17 min | 6 am to 10 pm | None listed |
| Polygon Gallery | 20 min | 10 am to 5 pm, Thursdays to 9 pm | Mondays and Tuesdays |
| Lonsdale Quay Market | 21 min | Level 1 stalls 9 am to 7 pm | None listed |
| Vancouver Aquarium | 23 min | 10 am to 5 pm, last entry 90 minutes before closing | None listed |
| Capilano Suspension Bridge Park | 25 min | 9 am to 6 pm from 22 February to 30 April 2027 | 25 December |
| Granville Island Public Market | 26 min | 9 am to 6 pm, to 7 pm Thursday to Sunday from June to early September | 25 and 26 December, 1 January and Mondays in January |
Each figure in the second column comes from the sight's own file, timed by the fastest public way back to Canada Place, and Capilano's 25 minutes comes from the park shuttle's outbound timetable. On a Monday or Tuesday call, give the North Vancouver hour to the Lonsdale Quay Market, which opens every day.
When does the cruise season run?
Vancouver's 2026 season opened with the Disney Wonder on 26 February and closed when the Norwegian Encore sailed on 13 October. Canada Place handled 358 ship calls and about 1.4 million passengers that year, up 18% on 2025. Peak season runs from early May to late September, and on most peak weekends 40,000 to 50,000 people pass through the terminal between Friday and Monday, so leave extra time for the Canada Line and taxis then. On the port's preliminary 2027 calendar, Hapag-Lloyd's Europa opens the next season on 24 March 2027.
The terminal opened in 1986, and Holland America's Noordam tied up on 28 April that year as its first cruise ship. Before the 2027 season the port plans to add shore power at Canada Place so more ships can plug into BC's grid while they're docked. Ballantyne Pier takes Vancouver's overflow ships, so check your boarding documents for the berth before you plan the walk. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says its Vancouver offices sit on the traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
