Where should you sleep for a Sea to Sky day so you don't have to drive back to Vancouver?
A night up the highway turns a ten-hour coach day into an evening by the mountains and a lie-in. The coaches still decide how you get home, so book the bed and the seat together.
By Adam BognarPublished

Book Whistler Village for a day on the mountain and Squamish for a day on the Chief or with the eagles. A Village bed at Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside or Pangea Pod Hotel puts you a walk from the gondolas and from the Gateway Loop, where Epic Rides leaves for downtown Vancouver at 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm every day of the 2026/27 winter. Howe Sound Inn in Squamish sits above a brewpub an hour south of Whistler on the coach, and the Horseshoe Bay Motel gives a cheaper head start at the foot of Highway 99. The catch for every bed is the booking terms, which run from a 25% fee on any cancellation at Horseshoe Bay to a stay that turns non-refundable 14 days out at the Pan Pacific.
We compared the five places to sleep that North Van Guide's files hold between Horseshoe Bay and Whistler, read from each one's own pages on 16 and 17 October 2026, and lined them up against the coach timetables for 2026/27 that Epic Rides, YVR Skylynx and the Squamish Connector post. We didn't stay in any of them. Four of the five quote live rates only, so the table says what each price covers and what the file holds.
Squamish stands on the land of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The Resort Municipality of Whistler acknowledges that it stands on the shared, unceded territory of the Líl̓wat Nation and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).
Which bed fits which Sea to Sky day?
| Bed | Where | Suits | Price in our file | Coaches up and home | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horseshoe Bay Motel | Royal Avenue, Horseshoe Bay | An early start north or a morning ferry | From $168 a night for two in 2026, before tax | The Squamish Connector picks up at the ferry terminal by reservation | Every cancellation costs 25%, and nothing comes back inside 96 hours |
| Howe Sound Inn | 37801 Cleveland Avenue, Squamish | Climbers, couples and dog owners | Live rates; pet rooms and in-room bike storage cost $25 a day each, plus tax | Skylynx Standard and the Squamish Connector call at the Squamish Adventure Centre | The inn has no bike room, and only some rooms take pets |
| Nita Lake Lodge | Lake Placid Road, Creekside | Couples and families after a spa and a lake | Live rates; self-parking $35 a night and breakfast $39 | Skylynx stops at Legends in Creekside by reservation | Creekside sits 5 km south of Whistler Village |
| Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside | Skier's Plaza, Whistler Village | Families and groups who want a kitchen | Live rates only | A walk from the Gateway Loop | The stay turns non-refundable 14 days before a winter arrival |
| Pangea Pod Hotel | Sunrise Alley, Whistler Village | Solo skiers and friends | Live prices, with a refundable hold of $50 a person a night | A walk from the Gateway Loop | Adults only, and checkout comes at 10 am |

Why sleep in Whistler Village?
Because the gondolas and the coaches both start a short walk from the door, and the last coach home stops mattering. Coaches from Vancouver pull into the Gateway Loop beside the Whistler Visitor Centre, and the Village hotels are a walk from there. Next day, Epic Rides runs back to Burrard Station at 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm daily in winter, with an 11:00 am and a 5:30 pm on Friday to Sunday for most of the season, and every trip takes 1 hour 45 minutes. YVR Skylynx Standard coaches leave Whistler from 6:30 am and run to the airport by way of downtown.
Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside stands on Skier's Plaza, where the gondolas to Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb load a few steps away. Every suite has a full kitchen and a balcony, and the heated outdoor saltwater pool and two hot tubs open from 8 am to 10 pm all year. It suits families and groups who want to cook. The drawback is the money up front. The hotel charges the full room and tax 14 days before a winter arrival and 45 days before a festive one, and from then the booking can't be refunded or changed.
Pangea Pod Hotel rents private pods inside shared suites on Sunrise Alley, and it suits a solo skier or a group of friends on a budget for Whistler. Each guest gets a private gear locker, and winter guests leave skis and boards in a room Pangea calls the Toy Box. Up top, Pangea calls its Rooftop Patio Whistler's only rooftop bar. Every guest must be 18 at check-in. There's no guest kitchen, so plan breakfast in the Living Room or on Main Street, where Purebread opens at 8 am.
When does Creekside make more sense?
When you want quiet and a lake more than the Village bars. Nita Lake Lodge stands on Nita Lake beside the Whistler train station, 5 km south of the Village, and the Creekside Gondola loads for Whistler Mountain close by in winter. Every room has a basalt gas fireplace, and the lakeside hot tub and plunge pool open from 8 am to 10 pm. Guests get free snowshoes and slopeside ski lockers in season.
The drawback is getting around. A courtesy shuttle runs guests to the Village only when the front desk has space on it, and YVR Skylynx calls at Legends Hotel in Creekside only when you reserve the stop. Self-parking costs $35 a night plus taxes, and the breakfast buffet at The Den costs $39. For dinner nearby, Red Door Bistro on Lake Placid Road opens at 5 pm and fills well ahead, and its site posted a closure from 19 October to 5 November.

Why stop in Squamish instead?
Squamish suits a climbing day on the Stawamus Chief or a winter weekend with the bald eagles, and it puts you an hour closer to Vancouver for the ride home. Howe Sound Inn fills the second floor of the Howe Sound Brewing building on Cleveland Avenue with 20 rooms, so dinner is a staircase away. Ask for a Queen Daybed View room, which looks out to the Chief and the Mamquam range. The brewpub opens at 11:30 am every day and runs happy hour from 3 to 5 pm. The inn has no bike room, so riders keep the bike in the room for $25 a day plus tax.
Winter is eagle season. BC Parks puts the best viewing at Brackendale in November and December, from the Eagle Run viewing area on the dyke across from 41015 Government Road. The Sea to Sky Gondola closes for maintenance from 16 to 26 November 2026, so check its hours before you book a weekend around it. For dinner out, The Salted Vine on Second Avenue opens Wednesday to Sunday only.
Two coaches get you home. YVR Skylynx Standard coaches call at the Squamish Adventure Centre on Loggers Lane by reservation, and on the 2026/27 winter timetable the last one south leaves at 8:00 pm from Monday to Thursday and 9:00 pm from Friday to Sunday, reaching downtown an hour later. The walk-on Squamish Connector leaves the Adventure Centre for Waterfront Station at 7:00 am, 9:00 am and 2:45 pm on weekdays and at 8:00 am, 11:30 am, 2:45 pm and 4:30 pm at weekends, for $37 one way with tax included.

What about sleeping at the foot of the highway?
The Horseshoe Bay Motel works for a head start north, or for the night after a late day when you'd rather not cross the bridge. It sits on Royal Avenue a minute's walk from the ferry terminal, and its rooms for two start at $168 a night in 2026 before tax. The Squamish Connector picks up at the terminal by reservation, at 9:20 am, 10:20 am, 2:15 pm and 6:00 pm at weekends on its winter schedule, and the company says its times aren't set to meet any sailing. Its terms are strict. Every cancellation costs 25% of the booking, and nothing comes back inside 96 hours of arrival. You must be 19 to check in.

What should you check before you book?
Check the coach first. Epic Rides posts no buses at all from 20 to 26 November 2026, which takes in Whistler Blackcomb's target opening day of 20 November, and YVR Skylynx is the coach for that week. Epic Rides carries no bikes from November to April, and a Skylynx bike rides free only in a box or bag.
From July to September, wildfire smoke and closures shape Sea to Sky plans, so check the BC Wildfire Service and DriveBC before a summer night up the highway. A short-term rental in Squamish or West Van needs a provincial registration number on the listing, while Whistler sits outside the principal-residence rule. Room taxes sit on top of every rate above, and a fee the property adds to every stay belongs inside the price you compare.

Why spend the night on Vancouver's North Shore instead of downtown Vancouver?
A bed on Vancouver's North Shore puts you at the foot of the mountains before the day-trippers cross the water. You pay for it in choice, since North Vancouver's waterfront has three hotels.
