Do you need winter tires to drive to Whistler?
Yes, from 1 October to 31 March on Highway 99 between Horseshoe Bay and Pemberton. Cypress Bowl Road in West Vancouver keeps the rule a month longer, to 30 April.
By Adam BognarPublished

Yes. From 1 October to 31 March, Highway 99 from Horseshoe Bay to Pemberton is a signed winter tire route, so a passenger vehicle bound for Whistler needs tires marked M+S or with the mountain and snowflake symbol and at least 3.5 mm of tread. Without them, police can fine the driver $121 and turn the car back. The roads up to the ski hills on Vancouver's North Shore keep their own dates, with Mount Seymour Road on the same 1 October to 31 March window and Cypress Bowl Road running a month longer, to 30 April.
We took the highway rules from the BC Ministry of Transportation's winter driving pages and its South Coast map, and the ski roads' windows from Mount Seymour and Cypress Mountain, all read on 16 October 2026. Check DriveBC on the morning you drive for closures and live conditions.
Which roads need winter tires, and when?
All three roads below ask for winter tires from 1 October, and Cypress Bowl Road holds the rule until the end of April.
| Road | Stretch | Winter tires required | Source | Also know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highway 99 | Horseshoe Bay to Pemberton, through Squamish and Whistler | 1 October to 31 March | BC Ministry of Transportation | Police can turn back any vehicle without legal tires |
| Mount Seymour Road | Mount Seymour Parkway to the Mount Seymour base area | 1 October to 31 March | Mount Seymour | The road closes from 10 pm to 7 am between November and April |
| Cypress Bowl Road | Highway 1 exit 8 to the Cypress base area, 15 km | 1 October to 30 April | Cypress Mountain | Repaving to the end of October 2026 brings single-lane traffic and delays of about 20 minutes except on Sundays |
Highway 99's dates come from the ministry's South Coast map, which colours the whole road from Horseshoe Bay to Pemberton orange for the 1 October to 31 March window. The passenger vehicle sign reads "Must use winter tires" beside the M+S and mountain snowflake marks. The same map notes that the ministry puts up no winter tire signs on provincial highways inside municipal boundaries unless the municipality asks for them.
What counts as a winter tire in British Columbia?
A legal winter tire carries the letters M+S or the three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol, and it has at least 3.5 mm of tread left. M+S tires meet the legal minimum. The province recommends the mountain and snowflake tires for snow and ice, and all-weather tires can carry that symbol too.
Chains on summer tires are no substitute on a signed BC highway, and summer tires aren't permitted there in the winter months. The province still suggests carrying chains on top of your winter tires for extreme conditions. Studded tires are legal on BC highways from 1 October to 30 April.
What happens if you drive without them?
Police can fine a passenger vehicle $121 under section 125 of the Motor Vehicle Act for missing winter tires where they're required, and they can turn back any vehicle without legal tires or when they judge conditions unsafe. A commercial vehicle that isn't carrying chains where required faces $196. Trucks over 11,794 kg licensed gross vehicle weight must carry chains, and lighter trucks and buses need winter tires or chains on board. Whistler Blackcomb says police run random tire checks at the Alice Lake turnoff north of Squamish.
Do rental cars come with winter tires?
Most rental cars come on M+S tires, which meet the legal minimum on Highway 99, by the province's account. It still suggests asking the rental company for winter tires before you drive beyond Greater Vancouver, so ask the desk for the mountain and snowflake symbol when you book a car for the ski hills. A rental in BC posts its rate before tax, and the label reads plus GST, PST and the rental tax.
Drivers coming up from Washington follow the same rule on the signed road. British Columbia stays on UTC−7 all year from 1 November 2026, so BC runs an hour ahead of Washington from 1 November until Washington's clocks go forward on 14 March 2027, by our reading of both calendars. Times on this site print in Pacific time as BC keeps it.
What do the Seymour and Cypress roads ask for?
Both ski roads want winter tires, and Mount Seymour adds rules of its own on busy days. Mount Seymour Road climbs to the lots at 1,020 m and needs winter tires from 1 October to 31 March. Between November and April it also closes overnight, from 10 pm to 7 am. In extreme conditions the traffic attendants require all-wheel drive with mountain and snowflake tires. On winter weekends and holidays every car needs an "Arriving by car" ticket or reservation, and attendants turn away cars without one. Mount Seymour's own shuttle runs from Parkgate Community Centre in North Vancouver and from across the street from Rupert SkyTrain station from December to April in a typical winter.
Cypress Bowl Road climbs 15 km from Highway 1 exit 8 to the downhill area, and the Nordic area and tube park sit at 13 km. Winter tires are required on it from 1 October to 30 April, a month past the highway's window. Until the end of October 2026 the road is being repaved, with single-lane alternating traffic and delays of about 20 minutes every day but Sunday. Cypress Coach Lines runs a private shuttle that picks up downtown at the Vancouver Art Gallery. On the North Shore it stops at Lonsdale Quay beside Shipyards Coffee and at Taylor Way and Marine Drive by Park Royal, and its driver takes cash only. The company hadn't posted its 2026/27 winter timetable by 16 October 2026.
At Grouse Mountain the Blue Grouse Gondola does the climbing, lifting you from the base at 6400 Nancy Greene Way to the top in five and a half minutes. TransLink's 236 from Lonsdale Quay stops at the base.
Can you get to Whistler without driving at all?
Yes. Epic Rides runs non-stop coaches from Burrard Station in downtown Vancouver to Whistler Village in 1 hour 45 minutes for $44 return in 2026/27, and YVR Skylynx runs from the airport and from Melville Street downtown. Our guide to Whistler in a day without a car compares the first and last coaches. The Resort Municipality of Whistler acknowledges that it stands on the shared, unceded territory of the Líl̓wat Nation and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).
What changes once the winter window closes?
The Highway 99 rule ends on 31 March, while studded tires stay legal on BC highways until 30 April and Cypress Bowl Road keeps its own rule to the same date. The province reserves the right to restrict travel on the road at any time of year when conditions call for it. From July to September, wildfire smoke and closures shape Sea to Sky plans, and the BC Wildfire Service sends drivers to DriveBC for road access.
