Why spend the night on Vancouver's North Shore instead of downtown Vancouver?
A bed on Vancouver's North Shore puts you at the foot of the mountains before the day-trippers cross the water. You pay for it in choice, since North Vancouver's waterfront has three hotels.
By Adam BognarPublished

Sleep on Vancouver's North Shore when your days start early and point north. From a room by the SeaBus in Lower Lonsdale, the buses for Grouse and Lynn Canyon leave from the exchange next door. The Horseshoe Bay motel sits a minute from the ferry, and paddlers can pitch a tent on Indian Arm and be on the water at first light. Room tax in North Vancouver also runs 2.5 percentage points below the City of Vancouver's in October 2026. The trade-off is choice. North Vancouver has three hotels by the water and a few more by the highway, and on a night out downtown the last SeaBus decides when you go home.
We built this from North Van Guide's files on 11 places to sleep on Vancouver's North Shore, each read from the operator's or BC Parks' own pages on 16 and 17 October 2026, and from our hotel comparison, which priced every room for the same Tuesday night. We didn't stay in any of them. Each rate below is the one its file prints, with its year and whether tax sits on top.
What does a North Shore night give you?
Time at the start of the day. North Shore Rescue says lack of light is the main reason its volunteers go looking for overdue hikers, and on a December day the light goes early under the trees, so every minute you start sooner counts. Lynn Canyon Park opens its lot gates at 7 am. Grouse listed mountain access from 9 am on 16 October 2026, and Cypress runs its lifts from 9 am through the season. From a Lower Lonsdale hotel, bus 236 leaves for the Grouse base from Bay 6 at Lonsdale Quay and takes about 25 minutes.
A North Shore night also puts the ferries close. The Horseshoe Bay terminal sits at the western tip of West Van, and the boats for Nanaimo and the Sunshine Coast leave from there. Sleep beside it and the first sailing is a short walk away.

Which hotels make the most of it?
The three in Lower Lonsdale, because the SeaBus and the bus exchange stand beside them. Our comparison read each hotel's own engine for Tuesday 12 January 2027, and the rates below are those published figures before tax.
- The Coast Lonsdale Quay Hotel takes the third floor of the Lonsdale Quay Market building, so the boat is downstairs. Coast reopened its 70 rooms on 3 September 2025, and some have an ocean-view patio. It priced that Tuesday at $220 on a Book Now & Save rate or $259 flexible. It has no pool, and guests park at EasyPark's rates.
- The Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier suits swimmers and families with its heated 25-metre indoor pool, and its Harbourview rooms have balconies over Burrard Inlet. The Lobby Restaurant downstairs opens at 6:30 am. A mountainside king cost $249 that night, and underground parking costs $42 a night with taxes included.
- The Seaside Hotel has 71 rooms and a spa on the third floor, and the Shipyards Skate Plaza is about 30 metres from the door. Its flexible rate was $259. The guest who books must be 21 or older.
Drivers have different needs. The DoubleTree by Hilton North Vancouver in Lynnmour has 162 rooms and an indoor pool. Parking there is free, and Hilton's rate for that Tuesday was $234.60. The Econo Lodge Inn & Suites and the SureStay by Best Western on Capilano Road park you free too, and the Econo Lodge's two-bedroom suites have full kitchens. Chard Development has applied to replace both motels with a 12-storey hotel and a rental tower, and the District's project page showed no decision since 11 September 2024.
Where do you sleep for the first ferry?
The Horseshoe Bay Motel on Royal Avenue is a minute's walk from the BC Ferries terminal, and its rooms for two started at $168 a night in 2026 before tax. Troll's on Bay Street opens at 8 am for breakfast before a morning boat. The motel calls itself basic and quiet. Read its cancellation terms first, because every cancellation costs a 25% fee and nothing comes back inside 96 hours. If you're driving onto a Departure Bay sailing to Nanaimo, book the ferry ahead too, since BC Ferries no longer sells drive-up fares on that route.

Can you sleep out on the water or the mountain?
Yes, on Indian Arm, if you can paddle. BC Parks lists 20 free wooden tent pads at North Twin Island campground in Say Nuth Khaw Yum Park, 5.5 km up the arm from Deep Cove. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation and the Province manage the park together, and BC Parks translates its name as Serpent's Land. Carry all your drinking water and a stove, because the island has no fresh water and campfires are banned. Paddlers who want a longer day head for Granite Falls near the head of the arm, a four- to six-hour paddle by BC Parks' estimate. BC Parks advises going north on a rising tide and home on a falling one, and in winter it doesn't patrol or service the park regularly. Deep Cove Kayak rents boats for these trips from April, and from 5 October 2026 every rental needs full immersion gear.
Groups can book the Mount Seymour group campsite through BC Parks, about 100 metres from parking lot P1. Its shelter has a wood stove for winter nights. A regular group paid the $80 base fee plus $5 for each adult in 2026, billed for at least 15 adults, so the smallest bill came to $155 a night before BC Parks' transaction fee. Get up the mountain before 10 pm, when the Mount Seymour Road gate closes for the night between mid-November and mid-April.
Touring in an RV, you can park at Capilano River RV Park beside Park Royal on Squamish Nation land at Xwemélch'stn (Capilano IR 5). Winter RV sites start at $73 a night for two in 2026/27 plus GST, and the park takes only RVs from 2014 or newer.
The map
The map marks every place this piece visits.
Contours come from Mapterhorn, and the coast and water from OpenStreetMap.
What do you give up?
Late nights in the city, mostly. The last SeaBus leaves Waterfront Station at 1:22 am from Monday to Saturday and at 11:22 pm on Sundays and holidays, and after about 9 pm the boats come every half hour. Away from the Quay the buses finish earlier. The last weekday through bus from Deep Cove to downtown leaves at 5:45 pm.
Beds run short too. Central Lonsdale, Upper Lonsdale and Edgemont Village have no hotel, and neither does Lynn Valley's town centre, so a stay there means a short-term rental. BC's principal-residence rule covers both North Vancouvers and West Van, so book only a listing that shows its provincial registration number. The District of North Vancouver also wants its District business licence number on the listing.

How much does the room tax save?
A little. A room in the City or the District of North Vancouver pays 16% in October 2026, against 18.5% in the City of Vancouver, because North Vancouver's 3% hotel tax carries no Major Events top-up. On a $300 room that comes to $348.00 against $355.50, by our sum. B.C. Reg. 93/2013 sets the North Vancouver hotel tax to lapse on 1 February 2027 unless it's renewed, which would bring a February room down to 13%. A fee a hotel adds to every stay belongs inside the price you compare, and only the taxes sit beside it.
Quick answers
Which North Vancouver hotel is closest to the SeaBus?
The Coast Lonsdale Quay Hotel is closest to the SeaBus, on the third floor of the Lonsdale Quay Market building beside the terminal. The Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier sits about 350 metres away and the Seaside Hotel about 400 metres.
Where can you stay near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal?
The Horseshoe Bay Motel on Royal Avenue stands a minute's walk from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, with rooms for two from $168 a night in 2026 before tax. West Vancouver approved a 42-room hotel on Bay Street in July 2026, and nobody has announced when it will open.
Can you camp on Indian Arm near Deep Cove?
Yes. BC Parks keeps 20 free tent pads at North Twin Island campground, 5.5 km up Indian Arm from Deep Cove, on a first come, first served basis. You reach it by boat and carry your own drinking water.

How does Vancouver's North Shore fit together between the mountains and the inlet?
Every neighbourhood on Vancouver's North Shore sits on the same narrow shelf between Burrard Inlet and the mountains, and the rivers coming down off the slopes divide it into valleys. You cross it along the water and climb it up each valley.
