Where should you base yourself on Vancouver's North Shore for a first visit?
Lower Lonsdale suits a first visit best, because its three hotels stand within about 400 metres of the SeaBus to downtown Vancouver.
By Adam BognarPublished Updated

Base yourself in Lower Lonsdale for a first visit to Vancouver's North Shore. All three of its hotels stand within about 400 metres of Lonsdale Quay, where the SeaBus leaves for downtown Vancouver every 10 to 15 minutes through most of the day and crosses in 12. The 236 bus to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and Grouse Mountain leaves from the exchange beside the terminal. Look elsewhere only when one plan fills most of your days, such as forest trails from Lynn Valley or an early ferry from Horseshoe Bay. Deep Cove and the West Vancouver beach villages make better days out than bases, because their beds come down to private suites and one RV park.
We compared nine of the neighbourhoods and villages on Vancouver's North Shore that have their own town files on North Van Guide, using the beds, buses and practical notes our researchers checked on 16 October 2026. Bus and ferry times come from TransLink's fall timetable, effective 7 September 2026. Hotel figures carry their source and say whether tax sits inside them, and the after-tax figures are our own sums with the site's tax table.
Which base on Vancouver's North Shore suits which trip?
| Base | Who it suits | Where you sleep | Into downtown Vancouver | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lower Lonsdale | A car-free first trip | Coast Lonsdale Quay Hotel, Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier, Seaside Hotel | SeaBus, 12 minutes | The hotels' own engines priced Tuesday 12 January 2027 at $220 to $259 a room before tax (published) |
| Central Lonsdale | Food lovers and swimmers | Registered short-term rentals | 229 or 230 bus down to the Quay, then the SeaBus | No hotel |
| Upper Lonsdale | Hikers and mountain bikers | Registered short-term rentals | 230 bus about 3 km down to the Quay, then the SeaBus | No hotel, and the streets are residential |
| Lynn Valley | Forest walkers and Lynn Canyon days | DoubleTree by Hilton North Vancouver in nearby Lynnmour | 210 bus from Burrard Station with no SeaBus change | Downtown sits a bus ride away |
| Edgemont Village | Grouse evenings and Capilano days | Licensed rentals, or the motels on Capilano Road near Marine Drive | 246 bus to West Georgia Street | No hotel in the village |
| Deep Cove | Paddlers and the Quarry Rock walk | Guest suites in private homes | 211 bus from Burrard Station, 45 to 57 minutes | Through buses from downtown stop at 6:20 pm on weekdays |
| Ambleside | Beach days and dog walks | Capilano River RV Park and registered rentals | 250 bus, 20 minutes to Park Royal | West Van has few hotel rooms |
| Dundarave | A seawalk morning and a long lunch | Registered rentals | 250 bus, 30 minutes from Georgia at Richards | No hotel |
| Horseshoe Bay | An early ferry | Horseshoe Bay Motel, from $168 a night before tax | 257 express, 39 minutes | Rooms are scarce and evenings are short |
Why does Lower Lonsdale suit a first visit?
The SeaBus decides it. From Lower Lonsdale you walk to Lonsdale Quay and cross Burrard Inlet to Waterfront Station in 12 minutes, with a boat every 10 minutes at weekday peaks and every 15 minutes through the rest of the day. The last boat leaves the Quay at 1:00 am from Monday to Saturday and at 11:00 pm on Sundays and holidays. The 236 to Capilano and Grouse and the 230 up Lonsdale Avenue start at the bus exchange by the terminal.
The neighbourhood has three hotels. The Coast Lonsdale Quay Hotel takes the third floor of the market building beside the SeaBus, and Coast renovated all 70 rooms before it reopened in September 2025. The Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier stands about 350 metres from the boat and has a heated 25-metre indoor pool. The Seaside Hotel is about 400 metres away with 71 rooms and a spa, and the guest who books must be 21 or older. Each one prices its rooms on its own booking engine. For Tuesday 12 January 2027 the Pinnacle asked $249 for a mountainside king, and the Seaside and the Coast each asked $259 on a flexible rate. The Coast's Book Now & Save rate cut its room to $220 for stays to 31 January 2027. All three quote before tax, and their engines add the 16% of GST, PST and the City's hotel tax with no other fee on top.
Lower Lonsdale suits anyone arriving from YVR or a cruise ship who wants to ride transit the whole way. The Polygon Gallery and MONOVA keep a wet afternoon busy, and the Lower Lonsdale Business Improvement Area lists close to 60 places to eat and drink between the water and 3rd Street. The drawback is cost: on the January Tuesday we checked, the cheapest room of the three cost $220 before tax, or $255.20 with the 16% on our sum. Drivers heading to Cypress Mountain or Mount Seymour every morning would rather start beside the highway.
The City of North Vancouver acknowledges Lower Lonsdale as the traditional and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). The Squamish Nation community of Eslhá7an (Mission IR 1) sits just west of the Quay along West Esplanade.
Should you stay higher up Lonsdale Avenue?
Only if you're happy in a rental. Central Lonsdale has no hotel, and it suits travellers who want to eat where North Vancouver's Persian community does, on Lonsdale Avenue between Keith Road and Highway 1. The Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre opened at 23rd Street on 25 July 2026 with public skating, and the City said its pools would follow in fall 2026. The 229 and 230 buses together run often down the avenue to Lonsdale Quay, about 1.6 km downhill.
Upper Lonsdale suits hikers and riders who want the Baden-Powell Trail and the Mount Fromme trails at the top of the street. Lonsdale Avenue is in the City of North Vancouver up to 29th Street and in the District of North Vancouver from there to Rockland Road, so rental rules depend on the side of 29th Street you're on. Queens Cross Pub at 2989 Lonsdale welcomes families with minors until 8:30 pm. The 230 runs about 3 km down to the Quay. North Shore Rescue answers about 130 calls a year, and before any trail it asks you to tell someone your route and your turnaround time and to carry the ten essentials.
Is Lynn Valley a good base?
Yes, if your days start on a forest trail. Lynn Valley is the District of North Vancouver's town centre at Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway, and the 228 runs on up the road to the Peters Road stop for Lynn Canyon Park. Metro Vancouver puts the Lynn Headwaters entrance about 1.5 km on foot from the bus stop. The 210 runs from Burrard Station in downtown Vancouver through Phibbs Exchange to the village with no SeaBus change.
The town centre has no hotel. The nearest one in our files is the DoubleTree by Hilton North Vancouver, which has 162 rooms off Highway 1 in Lynnmour with an indoor pool and free parking. Hilton's non-refundable rate for a 2 Queen Beds room on Tuesday 12 January 2027 was $234.60 before tax, which comes to $272.14 after the 16% we compute for a District room that night. Hilton's own tax lines on that rate add $37.54, which matches. The trade-off is the highway-side setting, so most days start in the car or on a bus to the SeaBus.
Does Edgemont Village work for Grouse and Capilano?
It does, for a quiet base with a bakery for breakfast. Edgemont Village is the low-rise high street of Upper Capilano, and the 232 climbs from Edgemont Boulevard at Highland Boulevard to the base of Grouse Mountain, so an evening on the mountain needs no car. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park sits on Capilano Road above the river's east bank. The 246 links the village with West Georgia Street downtown.
The catch is beds. The village has no hotel, so you sleep in a licensed rental or at one of the two motels on Capilano Road near Marine Drive. Those are the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites North Vancouver and the SureStay by Best Western North Vancouver Capilano. Choice Hotels priced a small queen room at the Econo Lodge at $155 before tax for Tuesday 12 January 2027, or $144 for Choice Privileges members, and Best Western's engine ignored the January dates we asked the SureStay for. Chard Development has applied to replace both with a 12-storey hotel and a 37-storey rental building, and the District's project page shows no decision since its last public meeting on 11 September 2024.
Metro Vancouver warns that water released over Cleveland Dam can raise the Capilano River fast. Keep out of any area posted as dangerous in Capilano River Regional Park and watch the water whenever you're down by the river.
Can you base yourself in Deep Cove?
You can, if you're there to paddle and walk and you don't need downtown in the evening. Deep Cove is the District's small village at the mouth of Indian Arm, and its beds are guest suites in private homes on the rental sites. Base here to get onto the water early or up the Baden-Powell Trail to Quarry Rock before the day crowd arrives. Destination Vancouver puts the walk at 4 km round trip with 100 metres of gain in about 1.5 hours. Afterwards, Honey Doughnuts & Goodies on Gallant Avenue opens daily from 6 am to 5 pm.
The drawback is the bus. The 211 runs from Burrard Station to Deep Cove in 45 to 57 minutes, and its through trips from downtown stop at 6:20 pm on weekdays, 5:51 pm on Saturdays and 5:44 pm on Sundays. After that you change at Phibbs Exchange for the 212, which runs until about midnight on weekdays. In summer the District says the village lots fill early and stay full, and it charges $3 an hour to park from 1 March to 31 October.
BC Parks describes the shores of Indian Arm as the core of Tsleil-Waututh traditional territory, and the Nation and the Province manage Say Nuth Khaw Yum Park together.
Should you stay in West Vancouver?
Stay in Horseshoe Bay for an early ferry, and treat Ambleside and Dundarave as days out from a base elsewhere. West Van has few hotel rooms, and BC's principal-residence rule covers its short-term rentals.
Ambleside is West Van's beach neighbourhood at the north end of the Lions Gate Bridge. The 250 from Georgia at Richards reaches Park Royal in 20 minutes at weekday middays, and Ambleside's stops come next. Its nearest beds are private rentals and the Capilano River RV Park beside Park Royal, which sits on Squamish Nation land at Xwemélch'stn (Capilano IR 5). The RV park's winter sites start at $73 a night for two in 2026/27 plus GST, which comes to $76.65 on our sum, and RVs must be 2014 or newer. It suits an RV trip with a dog. Everyone else does better coming over by bus.
Dundarave sits at the far end of the 1.7-kilometre Centennial Seawalk from Ambleside, and the 250 gets there from Georgia Street in 30 minutes. It has no hotel, so plan it as a half day with lunch at the Beach House by the pier.
Horseshoe Bay is the ferry village at the western tip of West Van. The Horseshoe Bay Motel stands a minute's walk from the terminal and prices its rooms for two from $168 a night in 2026 before tax. We compute $189.84 once 13% in GST and PST goes on, since B.C. Reg. 93/2013 lists no hotel tax for West Van. The motel calls itself basic and quiet, and it charges a 25% fee on every cancellation with no refund inside 96 hours. Troll's on Bay Street has been frying fish since 1946 and opens at 8 am, early enough for breakfast before a sailing, and the family closes it for good on 31 December 2027. The 257 express reaches downtown in 39 minutes at weekday middays, and its last bus leaves the terminal at 12:20 am on weeknights.
What does a short-term rental need on Vancouver's North Shore?
A provincial registration number on the listing. BC's principal-residence rule covers the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and West Vancouver, and each rental unit needs its own number. The District of North Vancouver also asks a legal rental to run from the host's own home and to show its District business licence number. Book only a listing that shows its numbers, and ask the host before you pay if you can't find them.
Quick answers
What is the best area to stay on Vancouver's North Shore?
Lower Lonsdale in the City of North Vancouver suits most first visits. Its three hotels stand within about 400 metres of the SeaBus, which crosses to downtown Vancouver in 12 minutes, and the bus to Grouse Mountain leaves from the same exchange.
Are there hotels in Deep Cove?
No. Deep Cove's beds are guest suites in private homes on the rental sites, and in the District of North Vancouver a legal listing shows its provincial registration number.
How do you get from Lynn Valley to downtown Vancouver?
Take TransLink's 210 from the Lynn Valley bus loop to Burrard Station in downtown Vancouver, which runs through Phibbs Exchange with no SeaBus change. The 228 to Lonsdale Quay and the SeaBus make the other route.
Is there a hotel at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal?
The Horseshoe Bay Motel stands a minute's walk from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, with rooms for two from $168 a night in 2026 before tax. West Vancouver council approved a 42-room hotel on Bay Street in July 2026, and it has no opening date.
What time is the last SeaBus to North Vancouver?
The last SeaBus leaves Waterfront Station for Lonsdale Quay at 1:22 am from Monday to Saturday and at 11:22 pm on Sundays and holidays, on TransLink's current timetable.
