Central Lonsdale

Central Lonsdale suits visitors who want to eat and swim where North Vancouver locals do. Lonsdale Avenue here is the heart of the city's Persian community, and the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre opened at 23rd Street in July 2026. There is no hotel in the neighbourhood, so a stay means a registered short-term rental, and Lonsdale Quay sits about 1.6 km downhill.

Ride the 229 or the 230 down the hill to the SeaBus.
Who should base here
Central Lonsdale puts you among the Persian bakeries and restaurants on Lonsdale Avenue and a short walk from the Harry Jerome pool and rink. The 229 and 230 buses run often enough down the avenue that the SeaBus is easy without a car.
The name
Lonsdale comes from the Lonsdale Estates Company of 1882. Its owner, Arthur Pemberton Heywood-Lonsdale (1835–1897), lived in England and never saw the North Vancouver land his company bought.
English
SourceCentral Lonsdale starts at Keith Road at the north end of Victoria Park and runs up Lonsdale Avenue to Highway 1 at about 24th Street. This stretch is the centre of North Vancouver's Persian community, and its bakeries and restaurants are the reason a food lover rides up the hill. City Hall and the City Library face each other across West 14th Street just off Lonsdale. Lions Gate Hospital is about 300 metres east at 231 East 15th Street.
The new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre opened on 25 July 2026, and the City of North Vancouver calls it the largest community recreation facility on Vancouver's North Shore. Its NHL-sized arena seats up to 500 and runs public skating. The city said the aquatics centre would follow in fall 2026 with a 25-metre, 10-lane lap pool, diving boards, a leisure pool with a lazy river and two hot pools, and the one for ages 16 and up sits beside a steam room and a dry sauna. North Vancouver Recreation and Culture runs the building and posts the drop-in times. The centre carries Harry Jerome's name, and the city remembers him as a world record holder and a celebrated Olympic athlete.
Central Lonsdale is on the traditional and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). A stay here means a short-term rental. BC's principal-residence rule covers the City of North Vancouver, and each rental unit needs its own provincial registration number, so book only a listing that shows one. The 230 bus runs down Lonsdale Avenue to Lonsdale Quay, and together with the 229 it gives frequent service from the Quay up to 29th Street.
Worth knowing
- Ask any short-term rental host in Central Lonsdale for the provincial registration number before you pay, and pass on a listing that hides it.
- Ride the 229 or the 230 down Lonsdale Avenue to Lonsdale Quay for the SeaBus. The 230's buses carry a front rack for two bikes.

How does Vancouver's North Shore fit together between the mountains and the inlet?
