Sushi Masuda

Sushi Masuda suits a sushi lover who can book a month ahead, because chef Yoji Masuda serves one six-seat counter inside Oceanic Plaza on West Hastings Street. It holds one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, and the course costs $320 a person.
What to order
- The omakase course
- Gyoku, the egg cake made with local free-range eggs
Yoji Masuda grew up in Vancouver, and a childhood visit to a Tokyo sushi counter made him want to become a sushi chef. He cooked in Sapporo for a year and then apprenticed under his master in Ginza. Sushi Masuda is his first restaurant. The course opens with four or five appetizers before 10 to 12 pieces of sushi and a bowl of soup.
Masuda calls the vinegared rice the most important part of sushi. He blends a Koshihikari from Fukui with a Sasanishiki from Miyagi and seasons it with red vinegars aged more than three years. No sugar goes in. Fish from Japan comes straight from Toyosu Market in Tokyo, and the nori comes from a shop in Tsukiji.
Reservations open at 5 pm on the first of each month for the whole of the following month, so January tables go on sale on 1 December. Cancel at least seven days out or lose the deposit. The restaurant may cancel a table that arrives more than 20 minutes late. The course is for guests aged 13 and up.
Worth knowing
- Skip the perfume or cologne, because the restaurant asks every guest to avoid strong scents.
- Diners park free underground in the building. Press the buzzer at the garage gate and tell security you're eating at Sushi Masuda.
- Oceanic Plaza is a large office building, and the restaurant posts a photo guide to finding its door on Instagram.
