Wild Whales Vancouver has sailed from Granville Island since 2003 and calls itself the island's original whale watching company. Its office is at 1806 Mast Tower Lane. You choose your boat when you book. The partly sheltered boat gives you a cabin as well as outside viewing. If you'd rather stand in the open, the open-air boat rides more smoothly than a Zodiac, while the Zodiac itself carries small groups at the waterline for anyone 9 and up.
Every trip takes three to five hours because the boats go wherever the whales are that day, and the company gives its sighting rate as about 95%. Between 1 April and 22 May the boats leave between 11 am and 12:30 pm. Summer brings morning and afternoon departures from 23 May to 27 September, and from 28 September to 31 October each boat goes out once around midday.
In 2026 adults pay $199, and seniors 65 and over or students with ID pay $179. The Zodiac costs $209. Prices leave out the 5% GST, and the rates page says a fuel surcharge may be added without giving an amount. Your card holds the booking and you pay at check-in. Cancel 24 hours ahead, or 48 hours for a group of six or more.
The company doesn't recommend these trips during pregnancy or for anyone with chronic back or neck pain or an old spinal injury. Crews may cancel for high winds or rough seas, and a cancelled booking costs nothing.
Worth knowing
- Hold on to the free return voucher if no whales show up, because it never expires. It stays in your name and can't be passed on.
- Book the partly sheltered boat on a cool April or October day if you want a cabin to retreat to.
