The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) calls Into the Mystic the primary ascending trail on Mount Sproatt. It starts at 985 m and climbs 8.6 km to 1,650 m, where an emergency cabin stands at the junction of With a Twist and On the Rocks. The RMOW's trail layer rates it Moderate and marks Ascent as its recommended direction.
From the top you choose your way down. On the Rocks carries on west through the alpine toward Lord of the Squirrels, which drops you back to the Flank Trail, and With a Twist and Pot of Gold are out-and-back options. The RMOW says to allow another 2 to 3 hours for the descent. LESS gives a lower link from Into the Mystic across to Lord of the Squirrels.
The Sproatt Ranger Cabin at the top works as a shelter only while rangers are on duty during the day. The RMOW warns of unmarked cliffs and sudden storms up here. Grizzlies and black bears live on the mountain alongside cougars. Bring water, food, tools, tubes and a light in case a mechanical leaves you walking down.
Worth knowing
- RMOW rules keep e-bikes and dogs below the Flank Trail on Mount Sproatt, so neither can use Into the Mystic.
- Plan for 4 to 6 hours up and down, and check the RMOW's advisories page the same morning.
- Never feed a bear or leave food where one can reach it. Feeding or attracting dangerous wildlife is an offence under section 33.1 of BC's Wildlife Act.
