Steveston suits families and seafood lovers who want a working fishing harbour at the mouth of the Fraser River, and its boats sell their catch from the public sales float. The trade-off is distance, because the Canada Line and a 401 bus take about 50 minutes from Waterfront Station before the wait to change.

Give it a day
Ride the Canada Line from Waterfront to Richmond–Brighouse in 26 minutes by TransLink's station table, and change there to a Steveston bus such as the 401. The 401 runs about every 15 minutes at a weekday midday and reaches Steveston Exchange in about 24 minutes. Fisherman's Wharf opens seven days a week, and fishers sell from their boats at the public sales float. The Steveston Harbour Authority's season list keeps Dungeness crab and shrimp on sale all year with rotating closures, and halibut comes back in February. Buy what you see on ice and carry it home cold in a food-safe bag. The Harbour Authority warns visitors about a wild sea lion at the float, and feeding it breaks the federal Marine Mammal Regulations.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site stands over the water, and the cannery itself warns that it runs colder inside than out, so bring a warm layer. One ticket covers the whole day, so you can step out for lunch on the wharf and come back. Winter in the Village lights up Steveston from 19 November to 31 December 2026 with seasonal displays and free family events. Garry Point Park opens onto the water for a sunset walk at the end of the day.
Musqueam's own pages say its ancestors have lived throughout and stewarded the Fraser River estuary for thousands of years, and they name Richmond among the places that sit on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory today. Coming home, the last weekday 401 that makes a comfortable Canada Line connection leaves Steveston Exchange at 11:25 pm and reaches Richmond–Brighouse at 11:42 pm. A 12:27 am bus also runs. It pulls in at 12:42 am and leaves you four minutes for the last train toward Waterfront at 12:46 am.
Worth knowing
