Access
Every heritage building is accessible apart from the upper floor of the Chinese Bunkhouse, which has stairs. The boardwalk and some floors are uneven, and the paved west lot has marked accessible spaces.
The main building went up in 1889 as the Britannia Cannery and was turned into a shipyard and repair yard for the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company's fishing fleet in 1917–18. Today the eight-acre site strings its heritage buildings along a wooden boardwalk on the river, and entry is free. The site came to the City of Richmond through a land exchange after it had sat empty for years.
Step into Murakami House, where a Japanese Canadian family lived from 1929 until 1942. That year they were forcibly uprooted, when the federal government removed Japanese Canadians from the coast. Saeji Kishi's Richmond Boat Builders, which built wooden gillnetters, changed hands in 1942 as well. The Chinese Bunkhouse arrived by water from Knight Inlet, where it housed Chinese cannery workers from 1915.
From 6 October to 31 December 2026 the buildings open Friday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm and close on statutory holidays. Heritage Holidays brings free festive fun to the site from 28 November to 31 December. The Seine Net Loft has been closed for repairs since 8 June 2026. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society names this stretch of the Fraser's mouth as the ancestral, unceded territories of the Musqueam and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking peoples.
